Spring Term 2010

24 January  Juliet Sharman-Burke * Mythic Tarot Part 1 :The Major Arcana *  This workshop will examine the 22 Major Arcana from a psychological as well as a divinatory point of view. We will look at myth, symbolism and imagery contained in the cards and will look at both the Mythic Tarot as well as other traditional decks. We will do as many example readings as we have time for in the group.

31 January  Liz Greene   * Astral Magic: The 'Other' Face Of Astrology * Astrology is usually viewed as a tool for prediction, or as a psychological tool to reveal insights into individual character and development. But there is also an older tradition of astrology linking it with the idea of invocation and transformation, embedded in ancient religious currents and expressed through ritual and talismanic objects. Although most modern astrology does not apply these approaches in its practice, ritual is a fundamental aspect of every astrological consultation, and the horoscope itself may be viewed as a talismanic focus and a means of invocation of internal energies and potentials. This seminar will explore the history and
development of astral magic and the subtle ways in which it still permeates many psychotherapeutic approaches and even the most prosaic of astrological currents in the twenty-first century.

7 February Lynn Bell  *  Betrayal and Trust : The passages of Pluto * The passages of Pluto often shred our innocence, and thrust us into a world of changed meaning, fraught with danger, and anxiety. Betrayal is one of the archetypal expressions of Pluto, whether it is the necessary betrayal of our tribe, the pressure to go against our own values, or the feeling of being cheated by life..  Nothing shakes our foundations more than what Hillman calls "love's torturous enchantments". Jealously and betrayal may lead to destructive rage, to cynicism or despair, to the closing of the heart; and yet the experience of  betrayal may  also bring an  initiation into our own nature, to the deeper levels of trust in life and in our own capacity for renewal. We well look at how Pluto transits and natal aspects describe these initiations, and how the Moon helps return us to trust.  Bring copies of charts on transparencies should you wish to work

14 February Karen Hamaker-Zondag  * Collective Cosmic Cycles in Solar Returns * Even when important aspects between the outer planets in heaven don't affect your birth chart by transit, they still can have a big impact on you, because these aspects can be part of an important solar or lunar return 2010 will confront us with the Saturn-Pluto square, and in July with the T-square between Saturn, Pluto and Uranus, and for a short while also Jupiter. Using examples we will look at some general rules to delineate the solar return, and then focus on collective issues and how they affect us personally through the solar return.

21 February Liz Greene *Vocation * The term 'vocation' comes from the Latin vocare, to call, and the history of the word is rooted in religious ideas about being 'called' by God or the gods to fulfil a special destiny. While some people may be content to have jobs they enjoy, others need to feel they have a special path in life through which they can unfold the best of who they are in ways which are also viable in worldly terms. Still others are able to engage in work that does not 'call' them if they feel they have a vocation apart from the daily grind of earning a living. Vocation can involve worldly success, but equally it can inhibit success if it conflicts with economic and social pressures. Vocation can generate friendships and cement relationships, but it can also erode family ties and create ruptures in relationship. This seminar will explore the complex theme of vocation from psychological and astrological perspectives – who needs a vocation, what it might be, what might thwart or block it, and how it might appear through the configurations of the natal and progressed horoscopes.

28  February Alexander Schlieffen * 2010 : The Climax Of Change : Saturn And Uranus Oppose Each Other For The Last Time For A Long Period * Whenever Saturn, Uranus and Neptune meet in a sign, there is a fundamental change in cultural paradigms. This happens approximately every 700 years.  Last time they met was in 1989. This was a historical turning point. It was the end of the old polarities between the eastern and the western world and the beginning of a multi-polar world.  Now, 20 years later, Saturn and Uranus are opposing each other, and together with Pluto, Jupiter and a lunar eclipse they form a grand cross in June 2010. What does that mean for our present and future? We will look at the challenging aspects and see how to use the energies involved for our benefit.

7  March Clare Martin  *  Astrology and Alchemy *  In this seminar we will consider Jung’s alchemical studies and explore the relationship between alchemy and astrology.  We will focus on some of the major alchemical processes which Jung believed described archetypal stages of psychological death and rebirth which we meet on the path towards individuation.   Often constellated by the transits of Saturn and the outer planets, an alchemical approach provides us with powerful images which can help us engage consciously and creatively with our own journey.

14  March John Green * Bad Things – Understanding our Darker Selves * Why do good people do bad things? Why do so-called ‘normal’ people commit evil deeds? Today we’ll look at how our unconscious continues to manifest in our lives until we become fully aware of it. What is going on in our chart when we avoid, deny, repress, split off, project and rationalise those parts of ourselves we don’t like? How does the Shadow manifest in our chart on both a personal and collective level and what do we do about it? Is evil truly out there or is it really in here?

28 March Darby Costello * Mars:  The Barbarian And The Aristocrat * In our deep memories  - coming down through the male side of our ancestry - Mars tells us about the weapons our ancestors used to keep our line alive.  Without those weapons we would not be here today.  With Saturn in Venus-ruled Libra, Mars must become canny and wise to keep itself in good shape, especially as Uranus is going into Aries.  In this seminar we shall look at our Mars inheritance and inclinations, in order to develop awareness of when it is acting the thug and when it is acting with shining skill on behalf of ourselves and those we cherish and protect.
